FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AS PLANTS
There are a surprising number of vegetables and
fruits that you bring home in your shopping bag that will
continue growing, with just a little preparation. Here are
a few:
Carrots -- To plant a carrot, cut off its top
half-inch section. Plant it in moist sand, with just a
portion of the top exposed. When the carrot begins to
grow, the first thing you will see are fern-like leaves.
As it continues to develop, it will be a delicate,
fern-like plant.
Sweet Potato -- For the sweet potato, the planter
will have to be waterproof. Plant the sweet potato root in
the container of water, with just the top third exposed.
This produces a vine plant, somewhat like a phildendron,
and can be trained on a stake.
Pineapple -- The pineapple is started in a
container of water, and later transplanted to a pot of
soil. To start, the pineapple is treated much as was the
carrot; cut off the top half-inch portion of the fruit,
with the green leaves attached. Place the cut fruit, green
top up, in the container of water. When roots develop, the
pineapple should be transplanted to the soil. Keep it
covered with a plastic bag for about three weeks, at which
time you can remove the bag, and you will have a
cactus-like plant. Keep the plant well watered, and
surprisingly, in about six to twelve months, it will bear
tiny pineapples.
